The Filipino Catholic community in Vienna gathered on the evening of 15 December 2024, to mark the start of Simbang Gabi. This cherished tradition signifies the beginning of the nine-day novena Masses leading up to Christmas. Unlike the Philippines, where Simbang Gabi is celebrated at dawn and known as Misa de Gallo (Rooster’s Mass), the faithful in Vienna adapt the schedule by holding the Holy Masses in the evening.

This unique tradition has brought Filipino Catholics together in the Austrian capital for years, fostering faith and cultural identity. The celebration allows the community to reflect on the season of Advent, deepen their spiritual preparation for Christmas, and strengthen bonds as they sing familiar hymns and hear the Gospel readings.

On the first night, the church came alive with joyous Filipino songs and a palpable sense of unity among attendees. The evening Mass, officiated by Filipino and local clergy, highlighted the theme of hope and anticipation, a central message of Simbang Gabi.

More than a religious practice, Simbang Gabi has become a symbol of home for Filipinos in Vienna. It rekindles memories of family and community back in the Philippines while adapting to life abroad. For the Filipino faithful in Vienna, this tradition is a testament to their enduring faith and a vibrant reminder of their roots, even in a foreign land.

The nine days of Simbang Gabi will culminate on 24 December, bringing with it the joyous celebration of Christmas.
